Noctilucent Cloud makes an appearance in Shetland's northern summer skies

Finally some rare clear skies that coincided with quite an extensive display of Noctilucent Clouds (NLC) in the nothern skies of Shetland. I have linked to one of the more comprehensive sites by Martin McKenna for those who want to know more and also how and where to report.

Not all our north facing live streams were cloud-free however Cliff Cams 1 and 3 along with Sumburgh Airport’s Runway 09-27 got a brief clear period for us to observe.

Usually NLC is often posted online as still images but I have posted the entire period where it is seen developing and then declining so that it can be used for those who study this summer phenomena.

I’d encourage regular viewers to look out for this and post a screenshot to alert me to make sure we can grab the footage and archive it in the same way we do with the better aurora displays. In Shetland we should be able to see this until the middle of August…assuming summer arrives this year.
