I don’t have an Archive folder for Comets and I’ve stuff planned for the next time this one will be visible…so I thought this should at least be shared.
You can find all the information you want about Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) from Wikipedia and if you have a good pair of bincoculars or a telescope then it might still be visible for a short time from TheSkyLive.com
Now this video is captured from one of our dark skies cameras pointing roughly west and located at Ronas Voe in Northmavine, Shetland. It does a pretty good job of showing the stars when the almost constant cloud cover permits and I noticed it quite by chance. I did not expect to see anything due to the recent weather when it was closest to Earth however it did stand out as the tail was visible.
I have included video from two dates - the 25th and the 28th October 2024 - and tried to include the transition across the frame as best as the cloud permitted. The 28th October was clearer and you can see the Milky Way too however the comet had already started to fade….but still obvious.
These videos are nothing special visually (but they do have audio to aid relaxation) and you will find plenty of fantastic pictures online but this is how it was captured live from Shetland and a privilege, at least for me, to have been able to see it transit our northern skies.
