This live stream was only seen live by our RedEye supporters but I wanted to share this with a wider audience as it was a nice visual aurora on our experimental camera located at Eshaness Lighthouse overnight Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th April 2024.
I am in the process of making major upgrades to our AuroraCam Network in Shetland to allow wider sky views and better colour reproduction in low light. This camera was installed for Summer 2024 with the aim to capture the midsummer skies locally referred to as the Simmer Dim…and perhaps some Noctilucent Cloud later in the season. Might we even see sunrise and sunset in June?
I was not really expecting much in the way of impressive aurora as the daylight increases this far north. The other factor is that these auroras are really only visible for another few weeks and when they appear to our cameras then most people have already headed to bed.
This sequence is pretty much the entire event from when it got dark enough, the clouds disappearing and then the morning daylight appearing. It has a soundtrack but this is basically an experiment to see how long the audio workflow works before the effects of the environmental challenges force me to remove it.
Remember to use the scrub bar to search through the entire clip and also I suggest using the speed control on x4 however the lighthouse beam gets a little too hectic…
This stream is currently running at HD1080P25 so it might look acceptable on a large TV screen…with the caveat that the sun has set and it is actually pretty dark…and with a little help from the moonlight. The lighthouse beam is a bit like marmite though…however the new camera copes well all things considered.
