A rare capture of an incredible aurora visible in the southern skies of Shetland

This has been on the To Do list for some time but as the nights continue to darken and winter approaches I wanted to post this in the Aurora Archive. It is pretty much the entire event but looking south from our camera at Braewick in Northmavine.

This view is normally of The Drongs and cliffs and it is great for viewing the moon and the stars…but rarely the aurora.

The event on the 10th October 2024 was impressive but not really in Shetland. That said, it was pretty good though but continual cloud cover made it a little tedious and as the event was so strong then the best views were to be found way south where it certainly captured media and public interest as our smartphones allowed so many fantastic shots to be posted. It made a lot of people very happy.

Although the aurora has been seen in the southern skies in Shetland it is often brief and rarely seen so low on the horizon. The Drongs live stream has captured glimpses but nothing like this and perhaps a celebration of the peak of Solar Cycle 25 which is expected to peak in 2025.

If you do nothing else with this video then just use the scrub bar and scan across the entire evening event using the thumbnail images.
