Clear skies, moonlight night and a brief burst of activity on what looks like a summers day

As auroras go Monday 10th February was downbeat compared to previous events. As we come out of this solar cycle then this would considered to be a more normal event. Low in our northern skies and a brief burst of activity with a diffuse auroral glow prior to and after the arc becomes active.

I wanted to post this from our main aurora cams simply because the rare event of Shetland having crystal clear skies and enough moonlight to make it look like it was a sunny summer day. The dymanic range of our auroracam network is pretty impressive but it can be best demonstrated with stars, moonlight and aurora all being seen at the same time.

Many viewers have already emailed me about why these cameras look like it is the middle of the day. I think it might be some time before we have the ability to see aurora from so low on the horizon across the entire island and with little or no cloud to frustrate…and stars…and moonlight.

I have not included the recording from Eshaness Lighthouse as it still has the remnants of the salt spray caked on the glass which hopefully nature will remove in due course.

Use the 4X speed on the player for extra oomph..
