Glimpses between snow showers the 2025 aurora archive kicks-off north and south

The skies above Shetland welcomed 2025 with almost constant aurora alerts however it was around 5pm on 1st January 2025 when the show really got going.

A number of our aurora cameras were covered in frozen wet snow and were out of action for this event however Eshaness Ligthhouse continued to deliver alongside some of our RedEye cameras. The Drongs looks towards the southern skies and it managed to capture the skies turn green and red as the event intensified.

Our new PTZ camera that overlooks the airport is not configured to provide aurora streaming due to the intense light from the airport however I quickly made some changes to allow us to look up…and capture the rare aurora ‘cornona’ event…and how the aurora competed with the ‘heart of the sun’ apron illumination at Sumburgh Airport :)

The clips shown below are captured at slightly different times depending on when the snow showers were passing by.

As usual, use the 4x from the settings in the player to speed it all up but even at normal speed this is quite a nice way to take time out of your day and relax a little whilst enjoying nature’s welcome to 2025.
